Biography
Synth prodigy Active Child has worked within and appropriated a number of styles: from his early days singing as choir boy to his recent forays into the bedroom made, laptop driven indie-pop best exemplified on 2010’s Curtis Lane EP. His debut album You Are All I See documents joy & heartbreak, battles with monogamy, love lost and rediscovered. Says LA’s Pat Grossi, “It came out much darker than I had intended, but sometimes you only have so much control.”
His sound is so wide-ranging that Grossi has found himself touring with English dubstep producer James Blake, dreamy synth-poppers School of Seven Bells and indie-rock bands White Rabbits and White Lies.
The grand, cinematic scope of You Are All I See owes as much to Grossi’s array of influences as it does his knack for employing them in forward-thinking ways. It is an album indebted to the sounds of the 1980s, from New Order’s drums-and-synths to danceable hip hop beats and soaring R&B melodies. Its first single, ‘Playing House’ features lo-fi crooner How To Dress Well, with Pitchfork Media saying that “Active Child’s sound now seems positively ahead of its time.”
“You Are All I See is an attempt to build a bridge between the listener and I, in that, I wrote these songs for you as much as I did for me. And right now when you are listening to my voice, by yourself, it really is just you and I,” says Pat Grossi of the album and its title.
