Tortoise to tour this May March 23rd 2010 By Michaella

Tortoise to tour this May

Post-rock giants Tortoise return to Australia this May for their first appearances on our shores in over five years! The return after such a long absence was sparked by an invitation from the Melbourne International Jazz Festival where Tortoise will perform under the Modern Masters  banner sharing festival time with (amongst others) Charles Lloyd, Ahmad Jamal and Claire Bowditch. The show at Melbourne’s Forum Theatre, will also feature Brian Chase (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) & Seth Misterka. The brief stop-over is to be completed with a show at Sydney’s Manning Bar.

Since 1994, the multi-instrumental Chicago based five-piece have released six albums of instrumental soundscapes often referred to as Post-Rock, a genre that loosely incorporates the intensity of modern of jazz and its complex arrangements, with a contemporary underground rock-edge. Tortoise’s latest album ‘Beacons of Ancestorship’ (out now on Spunk) continues their thread of uncompromising original music and ranks with their acknowledged classic ‘Millions Now Living Will Never Die’ (1996) as a pinnacle of the genre.

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy & The Cairo Gang March 22nd 2010 By Michaella

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy & The Cairo Gang

‘The Wonder Show of the World’ is about trust. It’s a record made eye-to-eye in a room, close and careful, by a few men who wanted to be together and who wanted to make music that sounds as good to listen to as it did to make, and who in doing so forged something new in space, the wonder of you and of them. Bonny ‘Prince’ Billy and The Cairo Gang have built a bridge forward, assembled with riffs and bits from Emmett Kelly’s guitar and the lyricism of Bonny’s heart.

‘The Wonder Show Of The World’ is out now on Spunk.

Broken Social Scene release ‘Forgiveness Rock Record’ on Spunk this May

After almost a decade together, Broken Social Scene deliver their first album of new material in five years this May, ‘Forgiveness Rock Record’. Written and arranged by the collective’s current line-up (Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, Charles Spearin, Andrew Whiteman, Sam Goldberg, Lisa Lobsinger) the album was co-produced by the band and mentor John McEntire (Tortoise) and features guest turns by BSS alumni Leslie Feist, Amy Millan and Evan Cranley (Stars), Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw (Metric), Jason Collet, Ohad Benchetrit (Do May Say Think & Years), Jason Crossingham, Marty Knack, Leon Kingstone, and Julie Penner. The record also includes contributions from McEntire, as well as Sam Prekop (The Sea And Cake), Doug McCombs (Tortoise), Spiral Stairs (Pavement), Sebastian Grainger (DFA 1979), Susan Voelz (Poi Dog Pondering), Alison Chesley (Helen Money), and Jason Tait (The Weakerthans’).

Broken Social Scene are back, and in an era of flash-in-the-pan super groups, we welcome them with loving open arms. ‘Forgiveness Rock Record’ is out May 7, 2010 on Spunk.
